Along with Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing for those suffering illness physically or mentally, or for those near their death.
In the rite of Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the person on their head and hands, blessing the person with the gift of grace to endure their suffering and to ask for healing, both spiritually and physically.
The sacrament unites a sick person’s suffering with that of Jesus’ and brings forgiveness of sins. Holy oil and the laying on of hands are both the symbols of this sacrament.
